Has anyone ever had a tooth abscess? I think I have one.
Backstory: About a month or so ago, I had a cracked filling that I went in to get replaced. While getting that one done, the dentist noticed a filling on one of my front teeth that also needed replacing. So I got that one done too. A few weeks later, that tooth started hurting. I attributed it to TMJ, since I always get referred pain with that. My TMJ normally flares up after dental procedure. I took some meds for a few days and the pain went away.
Well, last weekend that same tooth started hurting again. Then I noticed a bump on my gum right above the tooth. Pain that shot down into my tooth when I touched it. At first I thought it was just a canker sore or something. It doesn't hurt anymore like it was, but the bump is still there and is a little bigger. I messed with it the other day and it bled a little.
After researching with Dr. Google, I think I have an infection that has caused an abscess.
I'm a little worried that it's not hurting anymore. If it is what I think it is, that means the root is dying or has already died. I don't need a dead tooth in my mouth! It looks like I'll need a root canal to fix the problem. And of course my dentist closes at 12:00 on Fridays and I called at 12:30.
So I have to wait until Monday. There are emergency dentists that I could go to, but I'm sure they would rape my wallet.
I hate my teeth.
So anyone had experience with this? Or root canals?

Sorry, it's kind of gross

I have had a root canal (for a cavity that got too deep), but never an abscessed tooth. I do, occasionally, have a tooth that is very painful, but that is because I clench my teeth when I am really stressed.
You may want to call your dental insurance provider and see if there are any emergency doctors on their list.
Good luck and I hope everything works out. I am sorry I couldn't be more help.
EEEEEEW. That sucks! I'm sorry you're dealing with that. I've had root canals, but never an abcess. I'd guess looking at it that it is some form of infection, be it a cyst or an abcess or just a messed up part where they worked before. That sucks. If it is related to the prior work, I'd make sure that your dentist fix it for a lesser fee. If it is his (possibly) careless work that caused it, then why should you have to pay for it? Then again, I'm feeling pretty feisty now, so you probably shouldn't listen to my advice...
Here's hoping for a speedy recovery and uneventful fix!
