Shared Risk Programs

In response to Jem's comment:

85% chance of success? Where is your clinic and can I sign up?

OMG, those stats are amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How is that possible?

Please share the secret of your future success!

Jem

The clinic we go to does not have an overall success rate of 85%. However, we qualify for their Shared Risk program. The success rates for people who do Shared Risk with them is 85%. That is for two cycles, not just one.

I'm torn about how I feel about the Shared Risk program. There are three infertility clinics here in Bir.ming.ham. The one we're going to is the only one that has a Shared Risk program. On the one hand I am glad the option is there because it gives me a small bit of peace of mind about shelling out so much money. On the other hand, they only accept people into the program who are statistically going to get pregnant through IVF.

So is it unethical to provide these programs only to people who will likely be successful? I see how some people could have a problem with it, but am glad we can take advantage of it. I guess I'm just selfish like that.

Thoughts?

My IF clinic also offers a Shared Risk program. I have not yet looked into it enough to know if only certain couples qualify for it. I guess they do have to make $ somehow, so they can stay in business and help more couples! If it's available to me, I will take advantage of it also :). We are just not quite there yet...but after this cycle, I think we will be!

I think that it can make economical sense - especially since each try is usually about a 50/50 shot- but I don't really know all the details. I'm curious what you find out.
I don't think we'd qualify due to the fact that we need TESE in conjunction with ICSI - but maybe...

It does sound like they are stacking their percentage if they only let people in who they know it will work with. I hope that you make it in their group. However, if they know it won't work for you maybe it would be a good thing to not waste the money.

That's great they have a shared risk program. Gives you a little peace of mind. Can't help but wonder about those who don't qualify... not only do they have the odds against them physically, but also economically :(

Unethical? yes. More unethical than insurance companies charging lower rates to people with no preexisting conditions? I don't think so. It just seems like another variation on the type of thing insurance companies get away with every day. So glad you qualify. That's a good sign in itself.

Thanks for expaining the situation. I was ready to move to Bir.ming.ham (only been there once and had a great time. Lovely, warm people).

My clinic has about 44% success rate for IVF with ICSI. My acupuncturist claims to increase that chance to 65% with treatments before and after tranfer.

So glad you qualified for the Shared Risk program. It is a good sign in itself, like Astrid said.
